Faith Quest - A Workshop Model for Our Sunday School
The Faith Quest Ministry is responsible for teaching the bible to the children in our parish ages 7 to 13 during the service each Sunday. This ministry is modeled after the Workshop Rotation concept; the goal of which is to teach a series of bible studies over a 6 year time period with a view to imprinting them on the hearts of the children and thereby deepening their relationship with our Lord. Each bible story is taught over 3-5 Sundays. Each Sunday, the kids learn the story through a different type of workshop including: cooking, computers, watching/critiquing movies, drama, art and games.
The operation of this ministry is the responsibility of two teams including the curriculum team, headed by Hilary Schroeder and the staffing team, headed by Kate Berringer. The curriculum team decides what stories should be taught each year and comes up with the lessons with which to teach those stories, with help from the Workshop Rotation model website. Paul Hodson helps us out by posting those lessons on our website so that staff have easy access. The staffing team is comprised of approximately 11 leaders and shepherds who run each workshop, including Andrew Henley, Mike Cappello, Shelley Baron, Len Gendall, Christan Friesen, Asha Cappello, Leela Ninan, Nicholas Schroeder, Sheri Hubelit, Kate Berringer and Hilary Schroeder. We also have 5 coordinators who are each assigned to one type of workshop to locate and acquire materials for those lessons (Norma Trim, Daylin Haaland, Eric Haaland, Christan Friesen and Andrew Henley). We thank the Lord for all of these wonderful people who are part of the teams who make Faith Quest possible! We are currently looking for a sixth coordinator to be responsible for obtaining the materials for each Divine Diversions (or games) workshop lesson. This workshop comes up on the schedule approximately one Sunday every two months or so.
In the winter and spring of 2009, we taught rotation stories on Jacob & Esau, Emmaus, Solomon's Temple and the Body of Christ.
We’re now into the seventh year of lessons and since the fall of 2009, we have re-taught stories
from our first year on the Call of the Disciples, the Prodigal Son, and the Christmas Story from the viewpoint of Jesus as a child. We are currently doing a rotation on the life of St. Paul.
In the winter and spring of 2010, after the Paul rotation, we will run four rotations on the topics of Daniel, the Passion, Esther and the Parable of the Sower. Attendance since September, 2009 has averaged approximately 10 each Sunday with as many as 15 once or twice.
The Faith Quest children have also been given the opportunity again this year to participate in liturgical duties on the Sundays that they join us in worship. Sandra Dowie is responsible for assigning these duties which include greeting, being the crucifer, singing in a family choir, reading the lessons, cantoring, collecting and presenting the offering, bringing forward the bread and wine and communion ushering.
We’ve welcomed a number of new faces into our midst since the beginning of the year and look forward to more children "coming of age" in the near future to join our ranks. Emily Berringer, Dmitri Bohach, Jacob Cappello and Jonathan and Kayla Dobson are some of the new kids that have come on board this year. It’s so great to have you!
