GETTING READY FOR SUNDAY: PREVIEW OF THE READINGS.

THE LESSON: 2 Corinthians 3:4-11

Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are competent of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from God, who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not in a written code but in the Spirit; for the written code kills, but the Spirit gives life. Now if the dispensation of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such splendor that the Israelites could not look at Moses’ face because of its brightness, fading as this was, will not the dispensation of the Spirit be attended with greater splendor? For if there was splendor in the dispensation of condemnation, the dispensation of righteousness must far exceed it in splendor.  Indeed, in this case, what once had splendor has come to have no splendor at all, because of the splendor that surpasses it. For if what faded away came with splendor, what is permanent must have much more splendor.

THE HOLY GOSPEL:  Mark 7:31-37

Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be opened.’ And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, ‘He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.’

GETTING READY FOR SUNDAY: PREVIEW OF THE READINGS.

THE LESSON: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were heathen, you were led astray to dumb idols, however you may have been moved. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

THE HOLY GOSPEL:  Luke 19:41-47

As he came near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, ‘If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. Indeed, the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up ramparts around you and surround you, and hem you in on every side. They will crush you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave within you one stone upon another; because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.’

Then he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things there; and he said, ‘It is written, “My house shall be a house of prayer”; but you have made it a den of robbers.’ Every day he was teaching in the temple. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him;

GETTING READY FOR SUNDAY: PREVIEW OF THE READINGS.

Will we grow in the Spirit? This is our theme in the season of Trinity. In today’s Epistle reading, St. Paul does not mince his words: “If you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh you will live.” In today’s Gospel Jesus confirms Paul’s’ teaching: “every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire”, and warns us against false  preachers and teachers who encourage their listeners to give free rein to their disordered desires: they are wolves  in sheep’s clothing. During the Sundays from Trinity 3 to Trinity 9, we are attending to the authentic teaching concerning  our need for the cleansing of the ‘thoughts of our hearts’ from which sin and death arise, which is the pre-condition for spiritual growth. Today we consider the thought of covetousness and the healing remedies that are on offer in the Church.

Will we grow in the Spirit? This is our theme in the season of Trinity. During the Sundays from Trinity 3 to Trinity 9, we are attending to the practical matter of the need for the cleansing of the ‘thoughts of our hearts’ which is the pre-condition for spiritual growth. Having addressed the thoughts of ‘pride’ and ‘self esteem/empty-glory’ , ‘sadness’ and  ‘anger , todays we consider the thought of despondency and it’s remedy: the standard of teaching to which we were committed in baptism, which like the seven loaves which Christ,” took”, “blessed”, “broke”, and “distributed” is able to preserve our bodies and souls unto eternal life.
