10:00 A.M.  MORNING PRAYER (Prayer book pp. 6-15.)  Ps. 118; Deuteronomy 16:9-12; Acts 4:18-21,23-33

Opening Hymn:  Come, Holy Spirit, Come!    Tune: Diademata

Come, Holy Spirit, come! Inflame our souls with love,
Transforming every heart and home with wisdom from above.
O let us not despise the humble path Christ trod,
But choose, to shame the worldly-wise the foolishness of God.

Come with the gift to heal the wounds of guilt and fear,
And to oppression’s face reveal the kingdom drawing near
Where chaos longs to reign, descend, O holy Dove,
And free us all to work again  the miracle of love.

Spirit of truth, arise; inspire the prophet’s voice:
Expose to scorn the tyrant’s lies, and bid the poor rejoice.
O Spirit, clear our sight, all prejudice remove,
And help us to discern the right, and covet only love.

Give us the tongues to speak, in every time and place,
To rich and poor, to strong and weak, the word of love and grace
Enable us to hear the words that others bring,
Interpreting with open ear the special song they sing.

Come, Holy Spirit, dance within our hearts today,
Our earthbound spirits to entrance,  our mortal fears allay.
And teach us to desire, all other things above,
That self-consuming holy fire, the perfect gift of love!

Alleluia! Christ is Risen. The Lord is Risen indeed. Alleluia!

May his grace and peace be with you. May he fill our hearts with joy.

Welcome and Introduction to the Service

Jesus Christ, whom we worship, is our crucified, risen and ascended Lord  and we have walked with him through his journey of love. We have faced the agony of his suffering and death on a cross. We have rejoiced at his bursting free from the bonds of death. We have enjoyed his risen presence with us and his revelation of himself through the breaking of bread. We have seen his return to the throne before which every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord. And now, with the followers of his own time, we await the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, his gift to his people, through whom we make Christ known to the world.

Opening Responses

As we wait in silence
fill us with your Spirit.
As we listen to your word,
fill us with your Spirit.
As we worship you in majesty,
fill us with your Spirit.
As we long for your refreshing,
fill us with your Spirit.
As we long for your renewing,
fill us with your Spirit.
As we long for your equipping,
fill us with your Spirit.
As we long for your empowering,
fill us with your Spirit.

Silence is kept.

The Pentecost Reading:  Acts of the Apostles: Acts 2. 1-21.

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.  And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Par′thians and Medes and E′lamites and residents of Mesopota′mia, Judea and Cappado′cia, Pontus and Asia,  Phryg′ia and Pamphyl′ia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyre′ne, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,  Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”  And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”  But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.  For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day; but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; yea, and on my menservants and my maidservants in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth beneath, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and manifest day. And it shall be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Reader: The Lord is here.
People:  His Spirit is with us.

Prayer for Personal Renewal with Anointing of Oil

Be with us, Spirit of God;
nothing can separate us from your love.
Breathe on us, breath of God;
fill us with your saving power.
Speak in us, wisdom of God;
  bring strength, healing, and peace.

Blessed are you, sovereign God and eternal Father. Daily your Spirit renews the face of the earth, bringing strength out of weakness, hope out of despair and life out of death. By the power of your Spirit, may your blessing rest upon those anointed with this oil in your name. Let it be for them a sign of your acceptance and adoption, your equipping and empowering. Form in them the likeness of Christ, that they may be witnesses of your astonishing love, and fill them afresh with life in all its fullness.

Blessed be God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.   Blessed be God for ever.

Those who wish to receive this ministry of prayer and anointing come forward.

Hymns During the Anointing:

Be Present, Spirit of the Lord (Tune: Repton)

Be present, Spirit of the Lord,
Let sounds of earth be dumb;
The Father’s love be shed abroad,
The dew of blessing on us poured:
O silent Spirit, come! O silent Spirit, come!

In power unseen upon us rest,
Your gracious gifts impart:
A mind renewed, a spirit blessed,
A life where Christ is manifest,
An understanding heart, an understanding heart.

Love’s sovereign work of grace fulfil,
Our souls to Christ incline,
Intent to do the Father’s will
And stand by faith before him still
In righteousness divine, in righteousness divine.

O Spirit come, and with us stay;
Make every heart your home.
So work in us that we who pray
May walk with Christ in wisdom’s way:
O Holy Spirit, come! O Holy Spirit, come!

Breathe on Me, Breath of God

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what thou dost love,
And do what thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Until my heart is pure;
Until with thee I will one will,
To do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Till I am wholly thine;
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God:
So shall I never die,
But live with thee the perfect life
Of thine eternity.

Let us bless the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Let us praise Him and magnify Him for ever.

Hymn of Praise:  Glorify Thy Name (Maranatha #123)

Father, we love You, we worship and adore You,
Glorify Thy name in all the earth.
Glorify Thy name, glorify Thy name,
Glorify Thy name in all the earth.

Jesus, we love You, we worship and adore You,
Glorify Thy name in all the earth.
Glorify Thy name, glorify Thy name,
Glorify Thy name in all the earth.

Spirit, we love You, we worship and adore You,
Glorify Thy name in all the earth.
Glorify Thy name, glorify Thy name,
Glorify Thy name in all the earth.

Let us pray that the Spirit will work through our lives to bring Christ to the world.

Collect for the Day

GOD, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people, by the sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Lesson: Romans 8. 14-17

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.  For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, “Abba! Father!”  it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 1and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

R./ Thanks be to God.

Psalm 104:25-35, 37b

O Lord, how manifold are your works! *in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, *creatures both small and great.

There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, *which you have made for the sport of it.
All of them look to you *to give them their food in due season.

You give it to them; they gather it; *you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.
You hide your face, and they are terrified; *you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.

You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; *and so you renew the face of the earth.
May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; *may the Lord rejoice in all his works.

He looks at the earth and it trembles; *he touches the mountains and they smoke.
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; *I will praise my God while I have my being.

May these words of mine please him; *I will rejoice in the Lord.
Bless the Lord, O my soul. *Hallelujah!

THE HYMN: Glorious in Majesty

Glorious in majesty, Holy in his praises,
Jesus, our Saviour and our King.
Born a man, yet God of old,
Let us all adore him:
Filled with his Spirit, let us sing.

Living is to love him, serving him to know his freedom.
Come along with us to join the praise of Jesus.
Come to Jesus now, Go to live his word rejoicing.

Victory he won for us, freeing us from darkness,
Dying and rising from the dead.
Living with the Father now, Yet he is among us:
We are the body, he the head.

One in love, as family, living with each other,
Gladly we share each other’s pain.
Yet he will not leave us so, Soon he is returning,
Taking us back with him to reign.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: John 14. 8-17, 25-27

R./ Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.  ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. ‘I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

R./ Praise be to thee, O Christ.

DEARLY beloved in Christ, seeing that God willeth all men to be saved from the fault and corruption of the nature which they inherit, as well as from the actual sins which they commit, and that our Saviour Christ saith, None can enter into the kingdom of God, except he be born anew of Water and of the Holy Spirit, I beseech you to call upon God the Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ, that he will grant to this Child that which by nature she cannot have; that he may be baptized with Water and the Holy Spirit, and received into Christ’s holy Church, and be made a living member of the same.

Then he shall say the following Prayer:

ALMIGHTY and immortal God, the aid of all that need, the helper of all that flee to thee for succour: We call upon thee for DANTE, that he, coming to thy holy Baptism, may receive remission of sin by spiritual regeneration. Receive him O Lord, as thou hast promised by thy well-beloved Son, saying, Ask, and ye shall have; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: So give now unto us that ask; let us that seek find; open the gate unto us that knock; that this Child may enjoy the everlasting benediction of thy heavenly washing, and may come to the eternal kingdom which thou hast promised by him who is the Resurrection and the Life, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then shall the Priest say to the Sponsors:

DEARLY beloved, you have prayed that our Lord Jesus Christ may be pleased to receive, cleanse, and sanctify this Child, and grant unto him  the blessing of eternal life, which things Christ, for his part, will most surely perform. And now this Child, on his  part, must through you, his Sponsors, promise and vow that she will renounce the devil and all his works, believe in Christ, and obediently keep God’s commandments.

I demand therefore: DO you, in the name of this Child, renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the sinful desires of the flesh, so that you will not follow nor be led by them? Answer. I do.

Priest. Let us recite the Articles of our Belief.

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen.

Then shall the Priest say to the Sponsors:

DO you, in the name of this Child, profess this faith?
Answer. I do.
DO you, in the name of this Child, seek Baptism into this faith?
Answer. I do.
DO you, in the name of this Child, acknowledge the duty to keep God’s holy will and commandments, walking stedfastly in the Way of Christ?
Answer. I do.
WILL you pray for this Child, and take care that he may learn and do all these things?
Answer. I will.

Then shall the Priest make the following supplications:

O MERCIFUL God, grant that all sinful desires may die in this Child, and that all things belonging to the Spirit may live and grow in him. Amen.\
GRANT that he may have power and strength to have victory, and to triumph against the devil, the world, and the flesh. Amen.
GRANT that whosoever here shall begin to be of thy flock may evermore continue in the same. Amen.
GRANT that whosoever is here dedicated to thee by our office and ministry may also be endued with heavenly virtues, and everlastingly rewarded, through thy mercy, O blessed Lord God, who dost live, and govern all things, world without end. Amen.

Hymn in Procession: # 35 Wash O God our Sons and Daughters

Wash, O God, our sons and daughters
Where your cleansing waters flow
Number them among your people
Bless as Christ blessed long ago
Weave them garments bright and sparkling
Compass them with love and light
Fill, anoint them, send your Spirit
Holy Dove and heart’s Delight

We who bring them long for nurture
By your milk may we be fed
Let us join your feast, partaking
Cup of blessing, living bread
God, renew us, guide our footsteps
Free from sin and all its snares
One with Christ in living, dying
By your Spirit, children, heirs

Oh, how deep your holy wisdom
Unimagined all your ways
To your name be glory, honor
With our lives we worship, praise
We your people stand before you,
Water-washed and Spirit-born
By your grace our lives we offer
Re-create us; God, transform!

Priest. THE Lord be with you;
People. And with thy spirit.
Priest. Lift up your hearts;
People. We lift them up unto the Lord.
Priest. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God;
People. It is meet and right so to do.

Then shall the Priest say:

IT is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God, for that thy most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ upon the Cross, for the forgiveness of our sins, did shed out of his most precious side both water and blood; and after his glorious Resurrection gave commandment to his disciples, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

REGARD, we beseech thee, the prayers of thy Church. Sanctify this Water to the mystical washing away of sin; and grant that this Child, now to be baptized therein, may receive the fulness of thy grace and ever remain in the number of thy faithful and elect children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

The Priest, taking the Child into his arms, or by the right hand, shall say to the Sponsors:
Name this Child.

And then, naming him after them, he shall dip him in the Water or pour Water upon him, saying:
Dante, I BAPTIZE thee In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Anointing and Signing

WE receive this Child into the Congregation of Christ’s flock, and do sign him with the sign of the Cross, in token that hereafter he shall not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified, and manfully to fight under his banner against sin, the world, and the devil, and to continue Christ’s faithful soldier and servant unto her life’s end. Amen.

Giving of the Light

Receive the light of Christ to show that you have passed from darkness to light.
Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Giving of the New Clothes

Receive the robe of righteousness to show that you have put on Christ.
Be clothed in his love that you may stand without shame or fear on the day of his appearing.

Songs during the Robing:

Bless the Lord my soul, and bless God’s Holy Name.
Bless the Lord, my sol, who leads me into life.

Sing praises all ye peoples, sing praises to the Lord!
Sing praises all ye peoples, sing praises to the Lord!

Priest: SEEING now, dearly beloved brethren, that this Child is regenerate and grafted into the body of Christ’s Church, let us give thanks unto Almighty God for these benefits, and with one accord make our prayers unto him, that this Child may lead the rest of his life according to this beginning.

People: OUR Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

Then shall the Priest say:

WE yield thee hearty thanks, most merciful Father, that it hath pleased thee to regenerate this Child with thy Holy Spirit, to receive him for thine own Child by adoption, and to make him a member of thy holy Church. Grant, O Lord, that being baptized into the death of Christ, she may also be made partaker of his resurrection, so that serving thee here in newness of life, she may finally, with all thy holy Church, inherit thine everlasting kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

DEARLY beloved, forasmuch as you have brought this Child to be baptized into the family of Christ’s Church, and have promised that she shall renounce the devil and all his works, and shall believe in God, and serve him: you must remember that it is your part and duty to see that she be taught what a solemn vow, promise and profession he has here made by you, and be instructed in all other things which a Christian ought to know and believe to his soul’s health.

USE all diligence therefore to see that he be virtuously brought up to lead a godly and a Christian life; and to that end you should teach her to pray, and bring him to take his part in public worship.

TAKE care that he be taught the Creed, the Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer, and be further instructed in the Church Catechism; and then that he be brought to the Bishop to be confirmed by him; so that he may be strengthened by the Holy Spirit, and may come to receive the holy Communion of the Body and Blood of Christ, and go forth into the world to serve God faithfully in the fellowship of his Church.

REMEMBER always that Baptism represents unto us our profession; which is, to follow our Saviour Christ, and to be made like unto him; that as he died and rose again for us, so should we, who are baptized, die from sin, and rise again unto righteousness, continually mortifying all evil desires, and daily increasing in all virtue and godliness of living.

WILL you be faithful in the fulfilment of these duties?
Answer. I will, the Lord being my helper.

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, whose beloved Son did share in Nazareth the life of an earthly home: Bless, we beseech thee, the home of this Child, and grant wisdom and understanding to all who shall have the care of her, that she may grow up in stedfast love and reverence of thy holy Name; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GRANT, O Lord, that this Child may by thy mercy grow in health of body and mind, and serve thee faithfully according to thy will all the days of his life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
